Spaced repetition is one of the best-researched study techniques in cognitive science. The idea: practice a card just before you are about to forget it. Actively retrieving the information at increasing intervals is exactly what cements it into long-term memory.

When to start

Start early: the technique needs time between reviews to work. Begin two to three weeks before the exam and the daily workload stays small while retention keeps climbing. Starting the night before is what cram mode is for.

How it works in Studyflash

Every time you rate a card, Studyflash adjusts that card’s next review date. Easy cards get pushed further into the future; cards you struggle with come back sooner. The schedule adapts to your personal learning curve, and you manage none of it manually.

Card stages

Every flashcard is in one of three stages, and cards are color-marked accordingly:
  • New (blue): you have not studied this card yet.
  • Learning (red): you are still getting this card wrong or finding it hard.
  • Review (green): you know this card; it comes back at growing intervals.

Rating your recall

After you flip a card, rate how well you remembered it:
Rate honestly. Resist tapping Easy when you only “kind of” knew it; the scheduling only works if your ratings reflect your real recall.

Your daily reviews

Cards due today appear in the Due Today panel on your dashboard. One click starts a combined review across all your decks. Miss a day and the most overdue cards are prioritized first. Completing at least one session a day keeps your streak alive, and consistency is the biggest predictor of long-term retention.

Spaced repetition vs. cram mode

Use spaced repetition as your default. Switch to cram mode right before an exam to blitz through the whole deck.
