You are revising for your final exams at school from your own notes and a few old exams, or you face your January exams with a term's worth of lecture slides. Studyflash and Astra AI, the study app at astra-ai.co, both give you a study plan; Astra AI's is built around lessons that teach each topic. This review of Astra AI compares it with Studyflash on what each lets you do with your own material.
Our verdict: Studyflash is the better choice for anyone studying from their own notes, lecture slides and old exams. It turns your own old exams into a timed, graded mock exam with the same structure and question style. When we tested Astra AI in September 2026, it gave us no way to base a mock exam on an old exam.
In Studyflash, flashcards and quizzes open directly with no lesson first, and Max, Studyflash's AI tutor, makes the cards or quiz you request from your course.

Studyflash builds your mock exam on your old exams, Astra AI does not
Upload an old exam and Studyflash copies its structure and question style into a mock exam; we found no way to make Astra AI do that. You can take a Studyflash mock exam whenever you like, as often as you like, while Astra AI's mock exams come at set points in its plan.
The mock exam covers every deck and source in your course, and it can follow example questions instead of an old exam. Its eight question types include essay and calculation. The paper is timed and graded on your country's scale.
Without an old exam, you pick the question types and set the question count and time limit. In chat, Max can also make you a mock exam.
Open any study tool directly, or get cards only through a lesson
Studyflash opens flashcards and quizzes straight from your course, but when we uploaded the same four lectures to both apps, Astra AI offered them only inside one of its lessons.
In a Studyflash course, the study plan suggests an order for the topics, but you don't have to follow it.
The plan opens with a course overview and then takes you topic by topic to mastery, working towards your goal, whether a pass or the top grade. Summaries and mind maps also open straight away on their own, and in the mobile app they work offline, as do your flashcards and quizzes. Studyflash builds each one to cover all your material, in any of its 27 languages.
Flashcards come in six types, including image occlusion, which hides parts of your own diagram. Spaced repetition brings each card back by how well you remember it, while cram mode runs through every card without touching that schedule. You choose the card types and set both the number of cards and the level of detail to low, medium or high. You can regenerate with a note for Max.
Studyflash's tutor Max turns your course into the flashcards or quiz you ask for
Max has read every deck and source you uploaded, so whatever you request in chat, from cards and a quiz to a summary or a mock exam, comes from your own material.
Max answers your questions with citations from your notes and slides. Send him a photo of a problem you are stuck on, and he walks you through it step by step, or gives you the answer straight if you ask. Over time he builds a memory of how you learn, which you can view and manage.
Astra AI has a tutor of its own, yet when we asked the app for flashcards on a topic, we got a lesson with the cards inside it. Ask Max the same, and you get flashcards on exactly that topic from your own slides and notes.
Which one to pick
Astra AI is the better pick for a pupil who has neither notes nor a textbook and wants a topic taught from scratch.
- You study from your own notes, slides and old exams: Studyflash makes those old exams the model for your mock exam.
- You want your cards and quizzes without a detour: Studyflash opens them straight away, no lesson needed.
- You want cards on one topic: Max, Studyflash's AI tutor, makes them from your course.
How we tested
Maximilian S. from the Studyflash team tested both apps in September 2026. He uploaded the same material to each, unchanged: four master's-level lecture presentations with 130 slides in all, heavy on images, charts and formulas. They also carry definitions, worked examples and many notes typed onto the slides. He looked at whether an old exam can be uploaded as the template for a mock exam, and whether flashcards and quizzes open on their own or only inside a lesson.
