# Summaries

> Studyflash creates AI summaries of your material in two styles. Edit them, tune the settings, or export to PDF.

A summary condenses everything in your deck into a readable overview: key ideas, main arguments, and important definitions. Open the **Summary** tab in any deck to view it.

## When to use summaries

Read the summary before diving into flashcards: knowing the big picture first makes the details easier to place and remember. It is also the fastest final review before an exam: skim the headings, slow down where it feels fuzzy. Reading alone does not build durable memory though, so pair it with flashcards or a quiz.

## Summary types

* **General overview**: a compact walkthrough of the main ideas, ideal for orientation and quick review.
* **In-depth summary**: a detailed, structured write-up that goes deeper into each topic.

Before generating, you can also tune the settings: length, complexity, format, and whether to include reflection questions.

## Editing

The summary is fully editable rich text. Rewrite sections in your own words, add examples, remove what you do not need, and format freely. Edits save automatically.

## Exporting and regenerating

* **Export**: click **⋯ More → Export → PDF**. The PDF includes your edits.
* **Regenerate**: click **⋯ More → Regenerate Summary** for a fresh one. Your edits to the old summary are replaced, so copy out anything you want to keep.

## Writing your own summary

Prefer to write from scratch? When a deck has no summary yet, you can choose to start with a blank editor instead of generating one. This option is only available at the beginning, before a summary exists.
