# Flashcards

> Browse, edit, add, and study AI-generated flashcards in Studyflash. Multiple card types, PDF export, and two study modes.

Flashcards are the core building block of every deck. Studyflash generates them from your material so you spend your time learning, not formatting.

## When to use flashcards

Flashcards force active recall: retrieving an answer from memory instead of rereading it, which research shows is one of the most effective ways to learn. They work best for anything fact-like: definitions, vocabulary, formulas, and key concepts. Short daily sessions beat one long marathon.

## Card types

* **Definition**: a term on the front, its definition on the back.
* **Open-ended**: a question you answer in your own words.
* **Fill in the blank**: a sentence with the key term removed.
* **Vocabulary**: word pairs, great for language learning.
* **Image**: cards built around an image from your material.
* **Image occlusion**: parts of an image are hidden for you to recall, perfect for diagrams and anatomy.

## Managing your cards

Open a deck to land on the **Flashcards** tab. Search cards by keyword, filter by status, click a card to edit it, add your own with **Add Card**, or select and delete cards. Not happy with the generated set? Open the deck settings and click **Regenerate Flashcards**; your own cards are preserved unless you choose to replace everything.

> [!TIP]
>
> Reword a few cards in your own language and examples. Familiar wording is easier to recall.

## Studying

Click **Study** at the top of your deck and pick a mode:

* **Spaced repetition**: cards are scheduled based on how well you remember them. The default for long-term retention, see [Spaced repetition](https://studyflash.com/study/spaced-repetition.md).
* **Cram mode**: cycles through all cards without scheduling, for a quick last-minute review.

Want stricter recall? Choose **Type answer** on the front of a card to type your response and compare it side by side with the correct answer.

### On mobile

In the app, cards come as a swipeable stack: tap to flip, then swipe right for Good, left for Hard, up for Easy, or down for Again (or tap the rating buttons). Counters at the top show how many new, learning, and review cards remain in the session.

## Exporting as PDF

Click **⋯ More → Export → PDF** in your deck, choose fronts only or both sides, and the PDF downloads ready for printing.
